West-central Montana check station totals were slow but steady for the first week of rifle season and showed a below average harvest for deer, alongside an above average elk harvest.

The hunting of all mountain lions in Montana hunting districts 530 and 590, in portions of Fergus, Golden Valley, Musselshell, Petroleum, Big Horn and Yellowstone counties, closed at one-half hour after sunset on Friday, October 28, 2011.

Eurasian Watermilfoil was found in Beaver Lake north of Whitefish last week. The Montana Department of Agriculture and Flathead County requested a closure of the boat ramp at the Fishing Access Site, where a patch of the milfoil was found. The closure is necessary to prevent the potential spread of the invasive weed around Beaver Lake and to other lakes in the area.

Hunters took to the field Saturday and Sunday across northwest Montana for the opening weekend of the general deer and elk season. At the six northwest Montana check stations, a total of 3,174 hunters checked 114 white-tailed deer, 14 mule deer, and 22 elk for a 4.7 percent rate of hunters with game.
