Fish, Wildlife and Parks recently sampled several southeastern Montana prairie ponds. Several of the ponds have very low water levels and fish populations are either low or have winter killed in several locations. Winter conditions the last two years has produced little run-off and prolonged snow cover on the ice surface of the ponds. Under these winter conditions aquatic vegetation dies and decomposition follows which consumes oxygen in the water. This creates oxygen starved water which does not support

A new state law passed in 2009 increases the penalty for some vandalism at Montana State Parks and fishing access sites. Under the new law, those convicted of vandalizing FWP property are required to forfeit their current hunting and fishing licenses and give up their hunting and fishing privileges for two years, in addition to any fines and restitution ordered by the courts.

About a month ago, Ivan Keeney decided to take up fly fishing. He bought a $21 fly rod and learned to cast at Dry Bridge Family Fishing Pond in Kalispell, catching stocked rainbow trout. Once he felt that he was proficient at fly fishing, he decided to try for pike.
