At the six northwest Montana check stations through Sunday, November 9, a total of 8,095 hunters checked 428 whitetail deer (342 of these were bucks), 74 mule deer, and 28 elk for a 6.5 percent rate of hunters with game. Harvest was up as compared to last year when 5.2 percent of hunters checked game. The number of whitetail bucks checked is up 26 percent, mule deer numbers are about the same, and elk numbers are down 22 percent as compared to last year’s check station results at the same point in the season. Hunter numbers are down 7 percent.

FWP has completed its investigation of a reported self-defense shooting of a male grizzly bear in the Lower Thompson River area on October 26. The investigation conducted by Game Warden Troy Hinck and Warden Sergeant Jon Obst corroborated the information given by the hunter. No criminal charges are being filed.

At the six northwest Montana check stations through Sunday, November 2, a total of 5,589 hunters checked 281 white-tailed deer (235 of these were bucks), 54 mule deer, and 19 elk for a 6.3 percent rate of hunters with game. This compares to a 4.7 percent rate of hunters with game last year (see attached table). The counts at the six northwest Montana check stations represent a sampling of the harvest and do not represent the complete number of animals taken.

FWP is investigating a report of a self-defense shooting of a male grizzly bear in the Lower Thompson River area on October 26. The person who shot the grizzly reported the incident to FWP. Because the case is under investigation, no further information can be released at this time.

The hunting of all mountain lions in southcentral Montana hunting district 511, which includes portions of Wheatland, Fergus and Golden Valley counties, will close at one-half hour after sunset on Wednesday, November 19, 2014. This hunting district will re-open for the hunting of all mountain lions for the winter season beginning December 1, 2014.
