Region 6 Hunting Districts To Remain Open To Mule Deer Hunting

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission voted May 29 not to close several northeastern Montana hunting districts to all mule deer hunting this fall. A proposal to close the districts had been offered earlier this month in response to continuing low numbers of mule deer in the area. As a result of the Commission’s action, deer hunting in Hunting Districts 621, 622, 623, 630, 631, 632 and 670 will remain open to hunting of mule deer as stated in Montana’s 1998 Deer/Elk Big Game Hunting Regulations. Those regulations allow for hunting of antlered-buck mule deer or either-sex white-tailed deer in all of these districts during the general and archery-only seasons. Commissioners did adopt two changes to the printed 1998 regulations:

• in Hunting District 652, deer hunting will be limited to either-sex white-tailed deer, with no hunting of antlerless mule deer allowed during the general or archery-only seasons. However, hunters holding one of the proposed 125 special permits for taking antlered-buck mule deer in the district will not be affected by the closure.
• in Hunting District 650, hunting will be limited to antlered-buck mule deer or either-sex white-tailed deer, with no hunting of antlerless mule deer permitted. Printed regulations state that hunting would be for deer of either sex, either species.
