Hunters hoping to pursue mountain lions this fall and winter are reminded that the deadline for purchasing licenses each year is August 31. But because August 31 falls on a Sunday this year and September 1 is Labor Day, a legal holiday, FWP officials have announced that licenses must be purchased or applications for mountain lion licenses submitted through the mail must be postmarked by September 2, 1997. Mountain lion licenses are available only at FWP offices. Hound handlers must also obtain a free hound handler permit no later than September 2 to hunt OR chase mountain lions. A hound handler permit can be obtained in the same manner as a mountain lion license. There will be two mountain lion hunting seasons in 1997. The first season will be held in northwestern Montana (100 series hunting districts) from October 26-November 30, but dogs may not be used during this season. This season will close when 20 percent of the quota established for these districts has been reached, but no later than November 30. Those planning to hunt during this season in Region 1 also must purchase their mountain lion licenses by September 2 and must follow all other rules pertinent to mountain lion hunting. A season during which dogs may be used by lion hunters will be held statewide from December 1, 1997 - February 15, 1998. Mountain lion regulations are available at all FWP offices.
