Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission To Meet Sept. 25 In Helena

Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet Sept. 25 at the FWP Helena Headquarters, 1420 East 6 th Ave, beginning at 8 a.m.   The meeting will not be in Hamilton as originally scheduled.

Commissioners will make final decisions on a number of wildlife issues including:

  • a 24,000-acre conservation easement near Glasgow,
  • an administrative rule relating to the classification of wolves and depredation guidelines once wolves are delisted,
  • adjustments to the objectives of Montana’s elk plan,
  • 2008 elk harvest quotas and ranges for hunting districts 204, 261, and 270,
  • authorization for 2008-2009 game damage hunts,
  • endorsement of proposals to capture and relocate bighorn sheep and mountain goats this winter, and the,  
  • Ekalaka’s urban deer management plan, and
  • projects seeking funding from the Future Fisheries Enhancement Program.
A final decision will also be made on the classification of four exotic species and a revision to the exotic wildlife classification rules to provide for temporary housing for prohibited species until the animals are relocated.

Up for tentative approval is the 2009 non-resident big-game combination license rule.

The commission will consider endorsing a proposal for settling a dispute over an access easement on the Madison River, and a handful of conservation easements, including the Baldy Mountain and Gehring Ranch easements in the Blackfoot Valley, and three fishing access sites.

There will be a late-morning work session where FWP research biologists will present information about elk movements in the Madison, Gallatin, and upper Yellowstone River watersheds.
