Archaelogical Work At Two Western Montana State Parks



Bannack

  • Date: September 3-7, 2008
  • Time: 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • Where :   Bannack State Park, 25 miles west of Dillon, MT
  • Subject:   Historic archaeological excavation project that will mitigate impacts resulting from historic building stabilization at the Meade Hotel.   Work is funded by FWP and is being conducted by consultant and Historic Archaeologist, Dan Hall, of Missoula, with the help of volunteers from the Bannack Association.
  • Activities :   Professionals and volunteers working together to recover historic artifacts associated with the Meade Hotel prior to ground disturbance.   People will be digging and screening and learning what historic archaeology can teach us about the people who lived in Bannack more than 100 years ago.
  Fort Owen

  • Date:   October 11-12, 2008
  • Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (both days)
  • Where :    Fort Owen State Park, near Stevensville, Montana
  • Subject:   University of Montana archaeological survey and excavation field methods class at Fort Owen (listed in National Register of Historic Places)
  • Activities: Class of 10-15 students learning how to conduct archaeological survey and the tools and methods employed as well as how archaeological sites are excavated and how artifacts that are discovered are handled and analyzed.
