The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission has adopted   2008 hunting regulations and season dates for "webless" migratory game birds.

The hunting-season framework for Montana’s webless migratory game birds—mourning doves, common snipe and sandhill cranes—will follow federal recommendations and remain similar to last season.

Dove and snipe seasons open Sept. 1. Most other waterfowl seasons open in early October.

The seasons and bag limits would be similar to last year, with some minor changes which include:

  • Special permit season for the Rocky Mountain population of sandhill cranes is Sept. 6-21.
  • The mid-continent sandhill crane season is Sept. 27-Nov. 23. A free permit is required from FWP region offices in Glasgow, Billings, Miles City and FWP headquarters in Helena, or Bowdoin and Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuges.
  • Bag limits increased from one to two cranes in the Dillon, Twin Bridges and Cardwell area and in the Meagher, Wheatland and Sweetgrass area.
