Hunting
This article was Archived on Monday, September 15, 2008

Pheasant hunters, don’t be caught without one leg and foot left naturally attached to all birds you harvest.   The leg and foot must be attached at all times, including while transporting the bird.

On game birds such as grouse and partridge, one fully-feathered wing must be left naturally attached for species identification.

The leg and foot or wing must be attached at all times while the bird or birds are transported from the place where they were taken until they have arrived at the permanent residence of the hunter who possesses the birds.

A hunter who leaves game birds somewhere for a period of time, or who turns them over to someone else to transport, should have the birds tagged with the following information:

  • hunter’s ALS number
  • hunter’s signature
  • hunter’s address
  • total number of birds by species
  • dates birds were killed
Birds should also be tagged this way if someone is going to transport them for the hunter, or if the birds have been left for cleaning, storage, shipment or taxidermy services.

Other upland game bird hunting regulations may be found in the 2008 Montana upland game bird and falconry regulations available at FWP offices and license providers, and on the FWP web site at   fwp.mt.gov .
