Nine of southwest Montana’s wildlife management areas (WMAs) are set to open on Thursday, May 15 at noon. Users should note that all of the opening times have changed to noon from the traditional midnight opener.

May 15 is the normal opening date for five southwest Montana WMAs, including Blacktail (southeast of Dillon), Robb-Ledford (south of Alder), Fleecer Mountain (south of Butte), Mount Haggin (south of Anaconda), Mill Creek (northwest of Helena), and the Duhame addition to Mount Haggin.

Four others, including Gallatin (also known as Porcupine near Big Sky), Dome Mountain (Paradise Valley), Bear Creek (east side Madison Valley), and Wall Creek (west side Madison Valley) normally open on May 1. However, these openings were delayed to May 15 this year due to extended winter conditions and an unusually late spring.

Southwest Montana’s WMAs total 140,000 acres for recreational users to enjoy throughout much of the year and wildlife to use during the critical winter months.
