Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is accepting public comments on an environmental assessment for a proposal to implement a pilot project to reduce the urban deer population within the Helena city limits. The EA proposes to allow the City of Helena to remove up to 50 urban deer from Aug. 15, 2008 to Mar. 31, 2009. This proposal stems from the City of Helena’s Urban Deer Management Plan developed by the Helena Urban Wildlife Task Force. Under state statute local governments, in cooperation with FWP, may develop and implement local programs in an attempt to better manage human-urban wildlife conflicts. Towns and cities must receive FWP approval before implementing an urban wildlife management plan. Copies of the EA can be obtained in person at the FWP Helena Area Resource Office (930 Custer Ave.), by calling 406-495-3260, or on FWP’s website under Recent Public Notices at http://fwp.mt.gov/publicnotices/notice_1731.aspx. The deadline for submitting comments is on June 9, 2008, at 5 p.m. and should be sent to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks HARO—Helena Urban Deer EA PO Box 200701 Helena, MT 59620- 0701 Email: helenadeercontrol@mt.gov
