BILLINGS — A summer hunter education course is set for Aug. 7-9 at the Billings Rod and Gun Club. Registration will run from July 14-31 at the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 5 headquarters at 2300 Lake Elmo Dr. in Billings. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must complete the hunter education course to buy a Montana hunting license. The course will start at 6:30 p.m. and run until at least 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 and Friday Aug. 8. On Saturday, Aug. 9, the field day will start at 8 a.m. and continue until early afternoon. The summer course includes live firing of rifles and shotguns by all students during the field day. All activities will take place at the Billings Rod and Gun Club just west of the Billings airport. The course is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. Students must register in person during normal business hours July 14-31 at the FWP Region 5 offices. When they register, students will get a copy of the course manual. They need to read and study the book before Aug. 7 and pass a test on its content the first night to continue with the class. A parent or legal guardian must accompany students younger than 18 to register. And a parent or guardian must accompany minor students during the live-fire portion of the field day. Students must be at least 11 years old to register. The classes, field day and all materials are free for Montanans. -FWP-
