POSITION TITLE:   Weed Mapping Technician                                             # OF POSITIONS: one

 

LOCATION(S): Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park

 

WORK START/END DATES: May to August (12 week internship)                 HOURS/WEEK: 40

 

TRAINING/ORIENTATION DATES: April 26 & 27

 

COMPENSATION (PAY, PER DIEM, HOUSING, VEHICLE, ETC: $9.00/hr. A state vehicle will normally be available for use by the intern, but if unavailable, mileage compensation will be given to the intern for personal vehicle use. A food allowance will be provided when intern is in the field away from the regular assigned duty station. Both a department uniform and Workman’s Compensation will also be provided.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:   The intern will be responsible for surveying the weed infestations for Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park. The park covers 3,034 acres. This will include weed identification in the park, and the use of a GPS unit to record locations and survey the perimeter of infestations to identify the size of the area. The intern will produce maps of the park weed populations and submit a final report that addresses the extent of the weed infestations in the park. The intern will address weed infestation locations as to the best means of eradication, especially noting what areas are most suitable for aerial spraying.

 

SKILLS, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE NEEDED (EDUCATION; UNDERGRAD/GRAD LEVEL, SUGGESTED/REQUIRED MAJORS):   Graduate or undergraduate student in cartography, geography, botany, agriculture, range management or related field. Must be able to work independently. Position requires good physical condition to walk the steep terrain of the park in extreme heat or adverse weather conditions. Must have experience working with GPS and strong computer skills to complete the final mapping project.
