A packed agenda at the State Trails Conference in Missoula, April 17-19, at the Holiday Inn Downtown features state, regional and national experts. Topics include urban and backcountry trails, using trails to link homes with workplaces, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, access to trails, and trails funding opportunities. The conference will also offer opportunities to explore some of Missoula’s urban and backcountry trails.

The conference opens April 17 at 9 a.m. with a full-day workshop presented by Mike Wherely on the Community Transportation Enhancements Program. Wherely is the CTEP Supervisor for the Montana Department of Transportation.  A half day workshop from 1-4 p.m. is scheduled for those interested in the Montana’s OHV and Snowmobile Education Programs.

"This conference brings hikers, bicyclers, horseback riders, skiers, OHV users and snowmobile riders from around the state together to learn more about trails and share local experiences and issues," said Clint Blackwood, the State Trails Program Coordinator for Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Rick Potts, the Chief of the Office of Conservation and Outdoor Recreation from the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., and Tom Tidwell, USDA Forest Service Region 1 forester, will discuss Urban & Backcountry Trails.

On April 18-19, two days worth of concurrent sessions will cover forming partnerships for trails, funding trails, urban trails, trails on Federal lands, bridge design for urban and backcountry trails, OHV sound testing and more.

The 2008 State Trails Conference is hosted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Montana Department of Transportation. For more information, contact Clint Blackwood by phone: 406-444-4585, or email: cblackwood@mt.gov.
