Montana Hunter Education Instructor Pat McVay has completed his 51 st year of teaching the Hunter Education course in northwest Montana. McVay began teaching Hunter Education as soon as the law requiring it was passed in 1957. He is considered by many to be Montana’s first Hunter Education Instructor, because he submitted the first certification cards that year. McVay taught this year’s course in the East Flathead Valley March 3-9. One of his pupils this year, Josh Snyder, was a 3 rd generation student. Josh’s dad, Beau Snyder, took Pat’s class in 1985. Beau’s father, Paul Snyder, had Pat as his instructor in 1962. Pat began his hunter Education career teaching in Hungry Horse in 1957. From there, he moved his class to Coram, Columbia Heights, Lake Blaine School, Cayuse Prairie School, the East Side Grange Hall, and finally to his farm home a few miles east of Cayuse Prairie. He has held his class there since about 1980. Pat is assisted by Hunter Education Instructor Dennis Urban, and Assistant Instructor Kevin Fraley. Attached: Photo of McVay and his class, March 8, 2008.
