Every year about 2,000 Montana’s contribute an average of about $12.50 to conserve Montana’s nongame wildlife species such as songbirds, raptors and loons through the income tax check off. Imagine how quickly contributions to help nongame species could grow if more Montanans participated. If only 800 of the more than 900,000 wildlife viewers in Montana contributed just $10 each it would total $8,000 for nongame wildlife species—enough to fund two loon rangers on northwestern Montana’s lakes. Loon rangers patrol the lakes and wetlands to educate the public about loons and how to avoid disturbing nesting loons. Loon nesting and chick survival notably increases in the areas where loon rangers are at work. Watch for the flying eagle on your copy of the 2007 Montana income tax form to make a real difference for nongame wildlife species such as the loon.
