Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on its proposal to accept a 20-acre donation of land on the Clark Fork River approximately 30 miles southeast of Missoula. The land would be added to the existing Bearmouth Fishing Access Site. The existing FAS, donated to FWP by Stimson Lumber Company in 2006, is a narrow strip of land that provides walk-in access on the north side of the river. The proposed donation would increase the size of the FAS to approximately 30 acres and provide public access to low, level banks on both sides of the river. Although no developments are planned for the FAS at this time, the larger site would offer areas where facilities, such as a boat ramp or parking area, could be added in the future. Bearmouth is the only FAS in the 30-mile stretch of river from Drummond to Beavertail Hill State Park. The site is easily accessible from the I-90 Bearmouth exit. A draft environmental assessment (EA) for the proposal is available for review and comment beginning Wednesday, February 20, 2008. You may view the EA at FWP’s website, fwp.mt.gov, under “Recent Public Notices” or request a copy by mailing FWP, 3201 Spurgin Road, Missoula, MT 59804; phoning (406) 542-5500; or emailing shrose@mt.gov. Comments should be directed to Lee Bastian by mail at the address above; phone to (406) 542-5517; or email to lbastian@mt.gov; and must be received no later than 5 p.m., March 24, 2008. -fwp-
