Mark Your Calendars: Spring Hunter, Bowhunter Education Courses Scheduled For Northwest Montana

Spring Hunter and Bowhunter Education Classes are being scheduled for northwest Montana. All hunter and bowhunter education classes are free of charge and open to hunters and non-hunters alike.  Many students take the courses for the firearm safety, bow safety, and outdoor survival information, even if they don’t plan to hunt.

Hunter Education : By state law, anyone born after January 1, 1985 must have completed the Hunter Education Course to buy a hunting license in Montana. The minimum age for hunting in Montana is 12. A parent or guardian must accompany students under 18 to registration. The following classes have been confirmed:

Libby: Register at the Libby Middle School Library on Wednesday, February 13, 7-9 p.m. Classes are held from 7-9 p.m. at the Libby Middle School on February 18, 19, 20, 21; field course is held Saturday, February 23; classes continue 7-9 p.m. on February 25 and 26. Lead Instructor is Challis Crismore: home phone, 293-4562; work phone, 293-7122.

Whitefish: Register Saturday, March 8, noon to 4 p.m., and Thursday, March 13, 5-8 p.m. at the Whitefish City Library. There will be no late registration. Classes are held at Central School, and are scheduled for 7-9 p.m. March 27 and 31, and April 1, 3 ,7 ,8, 10 and 14. The field course is scheduled for Saturday, April 12. Lead Instructor is Leonard Howke, 862-4091.

Kalispell: Register Saturday, April 19, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks headquarters on North Meridian Road in Kalispell. Evening classes are held at Flathead High School from 6-9 p.m. on April 28, 29,30, and May 1. Field course is held on Saturday, May 3; written test is Monday May 5 from 6-8 p.m. Lead Instructor is Andy Breland, 212-1183.

Columbia Falls: Register at the North Valley Community Center in Columbia Falls in early April, dates to be announced. Classes will be held at the Columbia Falls High School at 7-9 p.m. on April 17, 21, 22, 24, 28,29, and May 1; Field Course is scheduled for Saturday May 3; test night is May 5. Lead Instructor is Wade Fish, 862-6359.

Bowhunter Education : By state law, all first time bowhunters must pass the bowhunter education course in order to purchase a bow and arrow license.

Kalispell: Register in person from 8-5 weekdays, beginning March 10 at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Headquarters on North Meridian Road; pick up pre-course materials and schedule when you register. The course is held March 25 and 28 from 6:30-9 p.m.; the field course is held Saturday March 29, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All classes are held at the Flathead Valley Trap Club north of Kalispell. The class will be limited to 40 students. Other Kalispell area classes will be held in April, May (two classes), June, and July.

Bigfork: Register for the Bigfork Bowhunter Education Course by calling Aaron Lasco at 756-5455. Classes will be held at the Ferndale Fire Hall, on May 13 and 15 from 6:30-9 p.m., and on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Whitefish: Register for the Whitefish area Bowhunter Education Course by calling Ron Nail (862-4509) or Ric Anderson (257-0590). Classes will be held 6:30-9 p.m. on June 2,3, and 6; the field course is held Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Columbia Falls: Register for the Columbia Falls Bowhunter Education Course by calling Dave Yeats at 892-4527. Classes will be held at the North Valley Community Center, 6:30-9:00 p.m. on June 17, 19, and 23; and Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Bowhunter and Hunter Education courses are offered in many other northwest Montana communities. These schedules and dates will be announced as soon as they are available
