Fish, Wildlife & Parks has set meeting dates in north central Montana to discuss the tentative 2008 big game hunting regulations.

For the 2008 hunting season some of the proposed changes affecting FWP Region 4 include:

ELK

  • A proposal to limit the number of bowhunters in the Missouri Breaks and other elk hunting districts where rifle hunting already is limited.
  • Scaling down the magnitude of the elk hunting season in district 410, where the elk population is near the management objective.
  • Instituting a five-week either sex season in most of the Little Belts.
  • No either sex elk season district 448 in the Little Belts; instead a bull only general season with anterless tags.
  • SHEEP:

  •   A special archery season for hunters with sheep licenses, starting Sept. 5.

  • SEASON DATES:

  • Either continue with the current system of season opening dates for most big game or
  • Have fixed dates for all big game openers. This proposal includes a two-day youth pheasant hunt before the regular pheasant season, like the current early youth waterfowl season, and a mountain lion fall archery season.
  •

    QUOTAS:

  • A proposal to allow the department rather than the commission to set harvest quotas each year.
  • All of the proposed changes will be on the FWP web site at www.fwp.mt.gov starting in January.
