In two unrelated incidents, wolves killed domestic livestock in the Dillon area.

In the first incident, two domestic sheep were killed by a wolf on private land in the Blacktail area east of Dillon. USDA Wildlife Services confirmed the depredations on Dec. 16.

Wildlife Services set traps in the area. If caught, the wolf will be collared and released to help determine whether it is a lone wolf or part of an unknown pack.

In the second incident, wolves killed a domestic calf on private property in the Big Sheep Creek area southwest of Dillon. The incident occurred on Dec. 19 and was confirmed by USDA Wildlife Services on Dec. 20.

A shoot on sight permit was issued to the landowner for one wolf.

To learn more about Montana’s recovered wolf population, visit FWP online at    www.fwp.mt.gov/wildthings/wolf, where visitors can also tell FWP when they see wolves or wolf sign. The information helps to verify the activity, distribution, and pack size of Montana’s recovered wolf population.
