Missouri Breaks elk management season begins Dec. 22

More than 100 hunters will be asked to help reduce a bourgeoning population of elk in a portion of the Missouri River Breaks during a special management season that begins this Saturday, Dec. 22.

The hunters were selected from the game-damage roster that was filled last summer. One hundred hunters from the District 622 roster and another 30 from the District 631 roster have been activated and each are eligible to harvest up to two antlerless or spike bull elk. Hunters may fill any unused elk tag that was valid in the 2007 regular season and may purchase an additional A-9 antlerless elk tag in person at FWP’s Glasgow office or by calling 228-3700.

The management season will take place in District 631 and the eastern portion of District 622, where the elk herd is well over Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ objective population. The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is not included in the management season.

“Elk numbers in the Region 6 portion of the Missouri River Breaks are currently double their population objective,” says FWP wildlife biologist Mark Sullivan. “Given the high elk numbers, depredation problems are expected to occur again this winter and next summer unless elk numbers are reduced closer to population objectives.”

FWP hopes to harvest 100 elk during the management season, which is designed to run through Feb. 15 or until the harvest objective is reached. If harvest lags, additional hunters from the game-damage rosters may be activated. Only hunters who receive a letter from FWP inviting them to participate may take part in the management season.
