GREAT FALLS -- A heifer calf was confirmed killed today by wolves on private land in the Middle Fork of the Dearborn River west of Bowmans Corners, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services. Wildlife Services had also confirmed wolves killed a calf on the same ranch Nov. 25. 2007. Fish, Wildlife & Parks has authorized Wildlife Services to remove up to three wolves from the Monitor Mountain pack. Earlier this year, a total of four calves had been confirmed killed on the same ranch and one calf was reported missing between January and March. In response, an adult wolf was radio-collared so that the pack could be monitored more closely. “We recognize that livestock producers have new renewed challenges now that wolves are back on the East Front,” said Gary Bertellotti, FWP Regional Supervisor in Great Falls. “We understand the importance of balancing private property concerns with wolf conservation." Working closely with landowners, FWP uses an incremental approach to address confirmed livestock depredations. FWP will continue to work with area landowners to reduce depredation risks and monitor the area for wolves.
