The extended elk season is over, and while final numbers won’t be known for months, it appears hunter’s efforts in north central Montana paid off. Numbers from Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Augusta check station along with anecdotal evidence elsewhere indicate 200 or more elk were harvested in FWP’s Region 4 during the two-week extension that ended Dec. 9. At FWP’s check station in Augusta, elk hunters brought in approximately 50 cows and calves. “There were certainly other elk taken we didn’t see because we had reduced hours,” says Brent Lonner, FWP wildlife biologist. The Augusta check station gathers data mostly from six hunting districts around the Sun River Wildlife Management Area on the Front. Winter weather cooperated with hunters the first week of the extension and the end of the second week.
