Law enforcement officials are seeking information in the Dec. 9 illegal killing of four cow elk in Meagher County. The incident took place before dawn along the Smith River Road just north of the Rockin’ Cs ranch, says John Lesofski, Fish, Wildlife and Parks game warden. “It appears as though the unknown shooter or shooters stopped along a county road and started shooting at the elk that were on a state section of land,” Lesofski says. “After the shooting stopped, four cow elk were down. The shooters then drove away, leaving the elk.” Lesofski collected evidence from the animals as well as from along side the road where the shooters stood. “This was not someone poaching to feed his or her family,” Lesofski says. “This was pure killing for the sake of killing. Several of the elk suffered for a long period of time before dying of their wounds.” Anyone with information on this incident should call 1-800-TIPMONT (847-6668) or Lesofski in White Sulphur Springs at (406) 547-3353. All information is strictly confidential and may result in a reward up to $1,000
