FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE December 5, 2007 Contact: Carillon Steorts – Information Desk – 247-2943 EXTENDED ELK HUNT GARNERS SLIM RESULTS Region 5 ran two check stations last weekend—one on the east side of White Sulphur Springs on Saturday and one at Lavina on Sunday. Lavina saw 95 hunters come through, while White Sulphur checked 105 hunters through that station. Only 22 hunters harvested elk. "The high on Saturday only reached 10 degrees, and hunters reported that it was difficult to get around on some areas of public land because of drifting snow conditions," said Adam Grove at White Sulphur. All 6 harvested elk through that check station were cows—1 on National Forest, 2 on private land, and 3 on Block Management. Seventy-six percent of the hunters reported hunting on public lands, 18% on private, and almost 6% on Block Management. At Lavina, where 95 hunters came through the check station, 71% hunted on public lands, 20% on private, and 9% on Block Management. "Twelve percent of the public land hunters were successful, while 32% of the private land, and 22% of the Block Management land hunters were successful," reported Roundup biologist, Jay Newell. "It was a tad cold and hunters out of the Belts commented about the high winds and the cold temperatures, as low as 15 degrees on Sunday morning," added Newell.
