The two-week extension of Montana’s elk hunting season, limited to about 75 hunting districts, will close at one-half hour after sunset on Sunday, Dec. 9.

"It appears elk hunters are taking advantage of the extended-season opportunity in several areas," said Quentin Kujala, chief of wildlife management for FWP in Helena. "We asked for the hunters’ help and they responded, especially in areas were snow and elk distribution are holding up."

Kujala stressed that the elk season extension is aimed at specific hunting districts where unseasonably mild weather—and some difficult public access issues—combined to keep the harvest below what is needed to meet elk-management objectives. No other general hunting season extensions for deer or elk are planned.
