Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is sponsoring a free gathering in Bozeman in December to discuss the issues and challenges associated with managing elk in Montana .
"Montanans have always had a passion for elk," said Jeff Hagener, director of FWP in Helena. "Many are asking how will Montana maintain the traditions that elk have come to symbolize as the state continues to change."
The 2007 Montana Elk Summit will convene a cross-section of interests to help answer that question, Hagener said.
The summit is set for Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Montana State University’s Strand Union Ballroom in Bozeman.
Participants will include experts on Montana’s elk management, hunters, outfitters, landowners, legislators and others. The agenda will include discussions on the status of Montana’s elk, new research results, social trends, recent legislation, hunter and landowner interests and expectations and more.
The over all objective is to help create a better informed corps of individuals and groups committed to working together to help define the future of elk management in Montana.
"Everyone who has a passion for elk—ranchers, hunters, outfitters, conservationists, business and community leaders, educators and more—will benefit from the knowledge and insight provided by the summit’s statewide perspectives," Hagener said.
The event is sponsored by FWP, the Montana Bowhunters Association, the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association, the Montana Wildlife Federation, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
