Region 6 Prairie Dog Implementation Committee meets Nov. 28 in Malta

The Region 6 Prairie Dog Implementation Committee will hold its second meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 28 starting at 3:30 p.m. in Malta. The session in the upstairs meeting room at First State Bank is open to the public and opportunities will be afforded for public comments.

The committee, comprised of representatives from state and federal agencies, landowners, business owners, recreational shooters and non-governmental conservation groups, is charged with developing a process that will ultimately identify the most suitable locations in Region 6 for prairie dog complexes.

In the Nov. 28 meeting the committee will review maps that illustrate existing and historic prairie dog distribution in the region and will hear an update on the prevalence and infection paths of sylvatic plague. Each member will also brief the committee on the conservation achievements and goals of their respective constituency.

The committee will meet at least four more times over the course of the winter. Members include: Phillips County Commissioner Troy Blunt, Phillips County ranchers Dale Veseth and Frances Jacobs, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologist JoAnn Dullum, Linda Poole of the Nature Conservancy, Dwain “Fritz” Prellwitz of the Bureau of Land Management, a representative of the World Wildlife Fund, Zortman businessman Rod Boland, recreational shooter Chris Johnsrud, Hoyt Richards of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, and Montana FWP biologist Ryan Rauscher.

Because the stairs to the First State Bank meeting room are long and steep, attendees may wish to take the elevator to the second floor. Contact Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Region 6 headquarters in Glasgow at 228-3700 if you need special accommodations to attend the meeting.
