Hunter harvest was slow in southwest Montana during the fourth week of the general big game season.

Overall, 2,372 hunters checked 65 elk, 59 mule deer, and 17 white-tailed deer on Nov. 10-11. Six percent of hunters checked game through eight check stations.

Warm, dry, and mild weather conditions continue to hamper harvest success.

The Cameron check station south of Ennis saw 280 hunters with 15 elk, 10 mule deer, and four white-tailed deer for 10.3 percent harvest success.

“Hunters are beginning to harvest more elk on the west side of the Madison Valley,” said FWP wildlife biologist Craig Jourdonnais. “Elk are becoming more visible and moving into areas where hunters can access them.”

Once again, despite the relatively low success, hunter numbers and interest remain very high at the Silver City station west of Helena. Six hundred and sixty-four hunters passed through Silver City with 15 elk, 19 mule deer, and 7 white-tailed deer.
