The deer and elk harvest in northwest Montana is running about average through the first week of the big game season.   Through October 28, a total of 8,377 hunters passed through the six northwest Montana check stations.   These hunters checked 512 whitetail deer, 88 mule deer, and 79 elk for an 8.1 percent rate of hunters with game.   The hunter numbers were up over last year, but total game taken was very similar.   The Olney check station led the way with 143 whitetails taken through the eight-day period.   According to Region One FWP Wildlife Manager Jim Williams, the mild weather probably has limited harvest to some degree.

Hunters are reminded to check hunting regulations for the area they plan to hunt before heading out to the field, and to ask first when hunting on private land.
