A grizzly bear cub was hit and killed on Highway 2 west of Essex last night about 8:30 p.m.   Grizzly Bear Management Specialist Tim Manley reported that the young bear weighed about 100 pounds.   Manley said that there was a report of an adult female grizzly and one other cub that were not hit, but he was unable to confirm that.

A motorist alerted the Montana Highway Patrol regarding the dead bear.   A highway patrol dispatcher got the word to FWP.   Manley picked up the bear at 10 p.m.

The grizzly’s carcass will be sent to the FWP lab at Bozeman for analysis.
