This article was Archived on Monday, September 17, 2007

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced today that all fishing on most of Big Hole River and the entire Jefferson River will closed effective Friday, Aug. 17 at 12:01 a.m. due to extremely low flows that threaten the rivers’ wild trout and grayling populations.

Today’s Big Hole River closure covers the 102 miles from the mouth of the North Fork ( 15 miles north of Wisdom) to the mouth near Twin Bridges. The Jefferson closure covers the entire 77 miles of the river from Twin Bridges to Three Forks.

With this Big Hole River action, the Big Hole is now closed to angling from the Rock Creek Road south of   Wisdom to Twin Bridges. Angling is allowed on the upper Big Hole above Rock Creek Road near Wisdom to the headwaters in Skinner Meadows.

The closures will remain in place until flow and temperature conditions return to levels warranting reopening as per the watershed committee drought plans.
