Montana State Parks annually offer a rich selection of summer learning experiences including storytelling, demonstrations, history, and even a sleep over for kids at Ulm Pishkun State Park this year. Read on for a sampling of upcoming events.

Wet Wonders Children’s Program Missouri Headwaters State Park June 22 at 11 a.m.

Explore aquatic insects and other creatures living in the shallows along the Gallatin River as part of this summer’s Friday morning Young Explorers series for children 5-10 and their caregivers. For details, call: 406-285-3610.

 

Memorable Mountain Men Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park June 22 at 8 p.m.

Who were these trappers and traders? How did they endure the hunger, loneliness and predators. Carla Wambach answers these questions. For details, call: 406-287-3541.

 

Montana Raptors Live! Missouri Headwaters State Park June 23 at 7 p.m.

Jeannie Hermes of the Montana Raptor Conservation Center brings live ambassador birds to the park. She will talk about types of raptors living in southwest Montana and their importance in the ecosystem. The presentation will be followed by a marshmallow roast campfire social. The Cowboy Way Bannack State Park June 23 at 7 p.m.

Share an evening of tall tales and songs of the west with cowboy poets and musicians John Westbrook and Val Phrophet. For details, call: 406-834-3413.

 

Personalities in the Park

Giant Springs State Park June 28 at 7 p.m.

“Janey on the Lewis & Clark Expedition” is one in series of programs titled “Personalities in the Park.” Learn about the fascinating life of the Native American woman with the Corps of Discovery and her near fatal death near Great Falls. For details, call: 406-454-5870.

 

All About Beavers Children’s Program

Missouri Headwaters State Park June 29 at 11 a.m.

Beavers create their own unique environment to live in and have many special adaptations to help them in their wet world. Explore beaver habitat at the park and examine sample hides and skulls. This program is part of the Friday morning Young Explorers series for children ages 5-10 and their caregivers. For details, call: 406-285-3610.

 

Dutch Oven Cooking Bannack State Park June 30 at 2 p.m.

Becky DeBoer will share her years of experience with Dutch-oven cooking and pass on skills needed to prepare delicious Dutch-oven dishes using this time-honored pioneer cooking method.

 

Night At The Pishkun Ulm Pishkun State Park June 30 at 6 p.m.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to hike the Ulm Pishkun trail at sunset, listen to traditional stories after dark and sleep all night in the Ulm Pishkun Visitor Center. Children ages 9-12 are invited to do so. Registration is required. For details, call: 406-866-2217.

 

The First Crow Agency Missouri Headwaters State Park June 30 at 7 p.m.

Kevin Kooistra-Manning presents “A Meeting by the River: The Crow Agency, 1869-1875.” This story conveys the dynamic relationship between the Crow and their allies and enemies, fur trappers, fledgling entrepreneurs and the U.S. government, as revealed by federal agency records.
