Home Run Pond youth fishing festival is Saturday Young anglers are invited to kick off the winter season at Glasgow’s Home Run Pond with a special ice fishing festival this Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to about 2 p.m. The pond, located in Sullivan Park on the Fort Peck Highway just east of Glasgow, is a designated youth water open to anglers aged 14 and younger. Normally anglers aged 12-14 need a Conservation License to fish the pond, but no license will be required for the Jan. 13 festival. Participants may bring their own tackle or borrow gear and bait from Fish, Wildlife & Parks, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Glasgow/Fort Peck Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited. Anglers can expect to catch rainbow trout as well as yellow perch and possibly a few small crappie. Volunteers from FWP, Walleyes Unlimited and the community will be on hand to drill holes in the ice, bait hooks and assist youth. A number of ice shelters will be set up on the pond so anglers can warm up. The day is expected to be frigid so participants should wear appropriate clothing and insulated waterproof boots as well as warm gloves and headgear. Boy Scout Troop 1805 will have a concession stand at the festival, selling cocoa, coffee, hot dogs and chili for a small fee. Participants can sign up for raffle prizes, including ice fishing rods and tackle. Home Run Pond has been closed to fishing since it iced over in late November. Following the Jan. 13 festival the pond will be open to young anglers until the ice breaks up in the late winter. “The festival is a great opportunity to introduce kids and their parents to ice fishing,” says Andrew McKean, FWP’s information officer in Glasgow. “We’ll demonstrate appropriate gear and be on hand to answer questions so that young anglers can enjoy the pond for the rest of the winter.” Call McKean at 228-3723 for more information on the Jan. 13 event or to learn how you can volunteer at Home Run Pond.
