Fans of the popular 59-mile Smith River float can pick up applications beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.

More than 4,570 Smith River hopefuls applied for one of the 821 permits available last year. It was the most applications ever and marked a 17.8 percent jump in applications received in 2005.

A typical Smith River float takes about four days. The float season usually runs from mid April thru July 4.

To apply for a Smith River permit, visit the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website at fwp.mt.gov. Click “Smith River Application” under Hot Topics. Or apply in person at any FWP office. Mail-in paper applications are available online, or from any FWP office. The application deadline is Feb. 15, 2007.   The registration fee is $30 for residents and $55 for nonresidents.   Additional floater fees are paid later.

Smith River planning tools--including maps, flow data, fishing information, and lists of services, and available outfitters--can be found online at fwp.mt.gov.
