Respected Sheridan Game Warden Jim DeBoer retired from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks on June 21, 2006, after 36 years of exceptional service to the citizens of Montana. DeBoer began his long career with FWP in 1969 in Missoula before transferring to Sheridan in 1975. DeBoer stayed in Sheridan for the remainder of his career. DeBoer set an example for all wardens—new and veteran—with his passion and dedication. He formed long-lasting professional and personal relationships with the people of Sheridan and beyond. He established an effective wildlife law enforcement program early on in his tenure, advocating strongly for the fish and wildlife resources of southwest Montana. “New and old wardens alike looked up to Jim and followed his example, said Warden Sergeant Coy Kline. “He has a unique ability to build positive relationships with all kinds of people in a variety of circumstances, an ability that served him and FWP well over the years.” DeBoer’s accomplishments are numerous and contributed to the strength and integrity of the enforcement division. He was a field-training officer for new wardens, a member of the tactical response team and swift water rescue, and a firearms instructor. DeBoer was also always available to help with kids outdoor education events such as Wall Creek Discovery Days and the Big Hole Kids’ Day. He shared his extensive blacksmithing skills with all at these events and others such as Bannack Days. In 1999, he received the Shikar-Safari Wildlife Officer of the Year Award for the state of Montana. “Jim is the epitome of a Montana Game Warden,” said Warden Captain Sam Sheppard. “He has represented Montana admirably and ensured that the Montana game warden tradition will be carried on by future generations of wardens.” “You can’t replace someone like Jim DeBoer, you just hope the next generation shares the same passion and commitment to the resources,” added Sheppard.
