The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will review a public request to implement a no-wake regulation within Georgetown Lake’s Stuart Mill Bay at their August 4 meeting in Helena. Georgetown Lake, located approximately 15 miles west of Anaconda, is a popular spot for anglers, wildlife watchers, boaters, and other recreationists. The proposed regulation would apply to 78 acres of the southeastern portion of the lake, or 2.7 percent of the lake’s surface area. A 2005 survey of 373 Georgetown Lake property owners indicated that many of the respondents supported the no-wake regulation as a way to reduce the risk of boating accidents, prevent conflicts between power boaters and small watercraft, and protect fish and wildlife habitat. If the no-wake regulation is approved as a tentative rule at the August Commission meeting, there will be a 30-day public comment period before final review at the September meeting.
