Glasgow girl wins honorable mention in FWP’s State Parks poster contest Vanessa Mattfeldt of Glasgow’s East Side School transformed a prairie dog town into a colorful celebration of Montana’s state parks. Her artistic rendering of Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park near Big Timber won the Glasgow girl honorable mention in Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ annual Montana State Parks Poster Contest. Along with statewide recognition of her artwork, Mattfeldt also won a photo opportunity with Governor Brian Schweitzer, a personalized tee shirt and a savings bond. Mattfeldt, who will be a 6 th grader this fall at Glasgow’s East Side School, was the lone finalist from eastern Montana. She settled on the prairie dog town, located adjacent to Interstate 90, because she “thought it would make a good poster.” Plus, she said, “I like prairie dogs. They’re neat.” Woody Baxter, FWP regional parks manager, applauds Mattfeldt’s work. “I just wish we had a state park in northeastern Montana that Vanessa could use as a subject for her artistic talent,” says Baxter. “She won’t have to wait long. We are currently developing our first Region 6 state park, Brush Lake south of Plentywood. Next year perhaps poster-contest participants can draw Brush Lake.” All the winning poster entries, including Mattfeldt’s prairie dog town, are on a statewide tour of Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices this summer and fall. They will be displayed at FWP’s Region 6 office in Glasgow from Oct. 5-19.
