Fish of Montana from the Journals of Lewis and Clark Poster
One of the goals given the Lewis and Clark expedition from Thomas Jefferson was to "Observe the animals of the country generally, & especially those not known in the U.S. …" During their travels through Montana, Lewis and Clark’s journals speak of the tremendous wildlife resources found here, including incredible descriptions of bison, grizzlies, elk, and other mammals. Although not quite as dramatic, the captains also noted numerous fish species in Montana, several of which were unknown to science until they observed them. A new poster by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, “Fish of Montana from the Journals of Lewis and Clark,” documents the piscatorial findings of the Corps of Discovery. The poster features nine species of fish mentioned during the party’s travels in Montana, as well as excerpts from the journal. In addition, the poster offers information about the status of the fish in the state today, including its current range in Montana. The Lewis and Clark fish poster is part of a larger FWP effort to help Montanans learn about the state’s unique fisheries resources, and is available at all FWP Regional Offices.
