These are good times to be fishing in Montana. With good spring precipitation, river and reservoir levels are as close to normal as they have been in a long time. Recent warm weather has warmed and cleared the rivers, triggering heavy insect hatches, and has caused warm-water species to become more active and aggressive. With high temperatures in the forecast, the window for these excellent conditions may be a narrow one, so don’t waste this opportunity; get out and get fishing!

Below are some of the best fishing bets right now:

Bighorn River- Flows have come up dramatically, and fishing remains excellent, especially with nymphs.

Fort Peck Reservoir- Fishing has been excellent for northern pike, walleyes, and smallmouth bass. The Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament is this weekend.

Madison River- The lower river is starting to warm up, so much of the action is concentrated in the upper reaches, with reports of good salmonfly hatches.

Upper Missouri River- We’ve seen good fishing with both dry flies and nymphs. Flows are up over past years at this time, so wade with care!

Nelson Reservoir - This is the place for excellent fishing for northern pike and walleye.

Rock Creek (near Missoula)- Still a good option right now with excellent wading conditions.

Tongue River Reservoir- Now is the time to plan a visit here and get in some crappie fishing.

Yellowstone River- Fishing in Paradise valley has been good, although most of the salmonfly action is already over.
