Zebra Mussel

Zebra mussles on a stick. A zebra mussel looks like a small clam with a D-shaped shell. Usually it has alternating dark and light stripes, is the size of a fingernail and is found attached to hard surfaces like clusters. Young zebra mussles look like black pepper and feel like sandpaper when attached to a boat surface.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on a proposed classification of exotic wildlife species for personal possession.
The classification system is required to implement a law regulating the import, possession and sale of exotic species in Montana. The law will help minimize human health risks and other potential risks to Montana’s wildlife, livestock and agriculture posed by exotic species.
A public meeting is scheduled April 6 at 7 p.m. in the FWP headquarters building in Helena at 1420 East Sixth Ave.
A statewide committee formed last year, including members of the public, developed the proposed classification system for "uncontrolled," "controlled" and "prohibited" exotic species.
"The FWP Commission tentatively approved the committee’s recommendations for classifying exotic species into three categories," said Eileen Ryce, FWP’s acquatic nuisance species coordinator. "Exotic species not currently classified are prohibited from being imported into Montana until the committee is able to determine how that species should be classified and what requirements, if any, must be met."
A list of uncontrolled and prohibited exotic species under these new classification recommendations is available on the FWP Internet under Public Notices, or can be obtained by calling 406-444-2449. A list of controlled species has yet to be developed.
Public comments may be made until April 14 by email to fwpexotics@mt.gov or mailed to: Exotic Wildlife Classification Comments, Fisheries Division, Montana Fish,Wildlife & Parks, P. O. Box 200701, 1420 East Sixth Ave, Helena, MT 59620-0701.
All animals imported into the state require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from an accredited veterinarian and an import permit from the Montana Department of Livestock. For a form to officially petition for classification of an exotic species, call 406-444-2449.
A final decision on the classification of exotic species will be made at the May 12 FWP Commission meeting.
