Smith River.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks completed the highly anticipated drawing for Smith River launch permits on Feb. 25, a week ahead of schedule. FWP issued 740 launch permits for the 2005 float season. Results are available on FWP’s web site, Special Drawing Status. FWP has moved the Smith River drawing to the same technology the agency uses for the big game special license drawings. "This year we offered a convenient on-line application, enabling applicants to complete and submit forms from their home computers," said Tom Reilly, FWP’s assistant administrator for Montana State Parks. Of the 3,884 applications FWP received, 36 percent were completed and submitted over the Internet. The number of applications was down slightly from the 3,902 received for the 2004 season. "Like so many of the individuals, families and friends who apply every year to float the spectacular Smith River, we’re hoping spring snow and summer rains will provide many great days of recreation," Reilly said. The earliest launch permit issued this year is for April 4 and the latest is for Oct. 31.
