Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comments on a proposal to release wild turkeys on a portion of the Milk River both east and west of Chinook. The department has released a draft environmental assessment (EA) that anticipates few or no impacts to the proposed release, which could take place late this winter or next year if suitable birds are available.

According to Havre-based wildlife biologist Al Rosgaard, as many as 50 wild turkeys trapped from existing populations elsewhere in Montana would be released along the Milk River between Lohman and Harlem. The release area extends up Battle Creek to Dry Fork Reservoir and along the lower reach of Lodge Creek.

Two dozen landowners in the affected area have been contacted and have approved the project. The draft EA is available on FWP’s website or by contacting Rosgaard at 265-6177. The public can comment on the proposal through Feb. 21. Comments will be incorporated into the final EA, which will go to the FWP Commission for approval later this year.
