Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ annual hunter harvest surveys began in December with calls to hunters holding moose, sheep and goat licenses. Other big and small game license holders who hunt deer, elk, antelope, black bear, upland game birds, and migratory birds will be surveyed starting mid January. Wildlife managers will use information collected during the survey to estimate the 2004 harvest and to recommend quotas for upcoming hunting seasons. According to FWP wildlife researcher Candy Hinz, about 80,000 Montana households will be contacted over the course of the survey period by over 85 interviewers located around the state who call from their homes on evenings and weekends. The simple telephone survey takes about five minutes to complete. Hinz said the surveys are an opportunity for hunters to participate in the collection of important data used in game management in Montana.
