With Montana’s hunting season’s winding down, outdoor lovers’ thoughts turn to winter recreation. One of the state’s popular choices is snowmobile riding. Here are some interesting snowmobile-related facts from information gathered by the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Snowmobile Program.

* There are just over 8,000 miles of snowmobile trails in the state, half of them groomed thanks to local snowmobile clubs.

* An average of 250 snowmobile riders attend FWP-sponsored education programs annually.

* Almost 26,000 snowmobiles were registered last winter in Montana and about 100,000 Montanans snowmobile each year.

* About 50,000 nonresidents snowmobile in Montana. Those who bring their own snowmobiles into the state are now required to purchase a $15 nonresident temporary use permit to assist in the cost of grooming and maintaining Montana’s snowmobile trails.
