Special August Events At Montana's State Parks

For some refreshing family entertainment, check out the Campfire Programs at Montana’s State Parks.   As an added bonus, entry into Montana’s State Parks is now free to Montanans, thanks to an optional $4 annual fee on Montana vehicle registrations. Camping, tour and rental fees continue in effect.

Here is a schedule of some upcoming programs. For a full listing, check the FWP web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us under Parks, then click on the Calendar of Events.

Aug. 3, 7-9 PM at Spring Meadow Lake State Park

Discovery Days programs are geared towards grade school aged kids, but everyone is welcome. Programs are related to natural and historical resources and are usually interactive. Programs are held outdoors so dress appropriately. Contact: Craig Marr 406-495-3270

 Aug. 4,   12 Noon - 1 PM at Giant Springs State Park

The Wednesday lunch hour program presented by a state park interpretive specialist will cover our state animal, the grizzly bear, and all its amazing feats and facts. Grizzly hide will be on display. Seating is limited so bring your lawn chair. Contact: Chris Dantic 406-727-1212 or 454-5870

Aug. 5,   8- 9 PM at Giant Springs State Parks

Fur trade historian Bob Dorek from Fort Benton will present a program on the history of Fort Benton. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. If the weather does not cooperate, we will move the program to the Fish, Wildlife & Parks building across from the park. Contact: Chris Dantic 406-727-1212 or 454-5870

Aug. 7, 1- 3 PM at Chief Plenty Coups State Park

Enjoy demonstrations of traditional Crow Indian arts, skills and talents by local artisans. There is no fee for this special program cosponsored by Chief Plenty Coups Advisory Council. Contact: plentycoups@plentycoups.org or call 406-252-1289

 Aug. 7, 7-9 PM at Missouri Headwaters State Park

Tim McNeil, historian, actor and avid canoeist, presents Canoes of Lewis and Clark, while portraying Meriwether Lewis. Tim carves a paddle using historic hand tools and displays a museum of miniature canoes, paddles and woodworking tools of 1803. Following each presentation is a marshmallow roast. Aug. 11,   12- 1 PM at Giant Springs State Park

During the Giant Springs State Park Community Artists Day, the Upper Missouri River Artists will be painting and drawing in the park most of the day. Aug. 19, 8- 9 PM at Giant Springs State Park

Aug. 21, 7-9 PM at Missouri Headwaters State Park

Pierce Mullen, Lewis & Clark enthusiast and MSU history professor emeritus, is currently researching the Louisiana Purchase. He presents the behind the scenes story in Undoubted Debt: Selling the Louisiana Purchase. Presentations are free to the public. We recommend bringing a lawn chair or blanket. Aug. 26, 8-9 PM at Giant Springs State Park
