Did you know that 413 bird species inhabit Montana, or that 12 new bird species have been documented here since 1996.

If details on the lives and times and birds appeal to you, the new Checklist of Montana Birds may be just what you’re looking for. The new list is based on the sixth edition of Montana Bird Distribution, published in 2003 by the Audubon Society.

A bird checklist documents the various birds in the state and groups them by family, indicating whether they breed here and if they stay the winter in the state. The free bird checklist is useful to bird watchers and other in determining bird species that might be seen in the field. Others may use the list to record the birds they see when on a field trip.

To print a free copy of the bird checklist go to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us , click on Wild Things and then look under Hot Topics.   The checklist is also available from FWP offices.

The Montana Bird Distribution book can be purchased for $15 from Montana Audubon, P.O. Box 595, Helena, Montana, 59624-0595. Interested bird watchers can also visit the Montana Bird Distribution web page at http://nhp.nris.state.mt.us/mbd/ to enter their own bird observations or to query the database.
