The deadline to purchase a black bear spring hunting license is April 14. The black bear hunting season begins April 15, with closing dates that vary by bear management unit. Licenses purchased after April 14 can only be used for the fall black bear season. First time black bear hunters are required to successfully complete the Black Bear Identification Test and must present the certificate of completion when purchasing a Black Bear License. The Black Bear Identification Test is available on the FWP web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us , click on Education, Hunting and then choose the "Bear Identification Program." Paper tests are available from any FWP regional office and most license providers. Licenses purchased after April 14 can only be used for the fall black bear season, which generally runs from Sept. 15-Nov. 28. Only one black bear license a year is issued to an individual. For details on the spring black bear hunting season, see the 2004 black bear hunting regulations available at all FWP regional offices, license providers, and on the FWP web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us under Hunting.
