Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks volunteers provided more than $863,000 in services this year, according to an FWP report on volunteers who work in State Parks and at fishing access sites. The report doesn’t include an estimated 3,000 additional FWP volunteers who give hatchery tours, work at game check stations, help fisheries biologists in the field or perform other tasks. “Our volunteers and interns are an integral part of our team. They provide many services for the public and complete projects that would not get done without their help,” said Debbie Cheek, who coordinates the FWP volunteer and intern programs. The dollar value of FWP’s parks and fishing access volunteer hours is based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics standard for volunteer hours of $16.05 per hour applied to 53,770 hours contributed by 1,940 volunteers. These volunteers worked as campground hosts, helped maintain parks and fishing access sites, and provided educational programs and other services this year. “FWP volunteers contribute thousands of hours to Montana’s natural resources and help ensure visitors to our State Parks feel welcome,” Cheek said.
