The application deadline for special permits to hunt sandhill cranes is Aug. 1. The season is Sept. 6-14 and the bag and possession limit allowed with a special permit is one sandhill crane. In the Central Flyway, for Wheatland and a portion of Sweet Grass County, 35 special permits will be available. Hunting sandhill cranes in the remainder of the Central Flyway requires a free license available from FWP regional offices. In the Pacific Flyway, the number of permits available are: * 35 permits in the Dillon-Twin Bridges area, * 25 permits in Warm Springs area, and * 35 permits in the Ovando-Helmville hunting area. Sandhill crane permit applications are available on the FWP web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us , click on 2003 Applications. Or, applications can be picked up at any FWP regional office or by calling 406-444-4715. Applicants must have a 2003 Conservation License before applying for the sandhill crane permit. Applicants for special permits must apply in writing for one area only to: FWP, License Section, Sandhill Crane Drawing, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701. Applicants must print their name and include a signature, state the hunting area they are applying to hunt in, and provide an address, date of birth, ALS number and a $3 nonrefundable drawing fee.
